Have you ever been outsmarted by a puppy? That’s how we felt while trying to rescue the “Fallen Roof Puppies.â€
The structure that these puppies were born under was a house that looked like the walls had just collapsed and the roof was resting on the crawl space concrete blocks. As far as protection for the puppies, it was perfect. But it created a nightmare in trying to rescue those puppies.
We had first seen these puppies when they were less than two weeks old. Our plan was to leave then with Mom until they were old enough to be weaned. The problem with that plan was that by the time they could be weaned, they were also mobile and could run away from us. And that is exactly what they did – over and over again! Time after time we had to drive away empty handed. We started to feel like that cartoon with the Roadrunner and Wile Coyote. We laughed about these little puppies hiding under this roof with their diagrams depicting ways to outsmart us and get away.
A couple of week passed, and we weren’t even sure how many might still be alive. Then our luck changed. We were able to get two of them before they could squeeze their way back under the roof. It took two more weeks of chasing puppies through overgrown weeds and abandoned houses before we finally got the last two. The puppies no longer need their diagrams, and are learning that people are not so scary.
Mom thanks us every time we feed her for saving her puppies, and looks forward to the day that Stray Rescue will have room for her.
