On 11/10 we received a call from a man who said that he thought his dogs foot was broken. He had been calling around for help, but no one would help him because he had no money. We told him to bring the puppy in so we could examine her. When he walked in with her, I was mortified. Her right rear leg was twice the size of her other leg and the skeleton on her foot and half of her leg was completely exposed. I've seen a lot of injuries but this was extremely disturbing. He said that the dog was out in the back yard and the air conditioner had fallen on her leg while he was at work and he works 24 hour shifts. He said that it had to have happened within the last day or so, when obviously it had been longer than that. It was also obvious that the puppy was an outside dog.
When we gave her food and water she acted like it was the first time she had ever eaten. Dr.Ed of Hillside Animal Hospital, spoke to the owner and let him know how expensive it would be and that we would probably have to remove the leg. He agreed to surrender the puppy to Stray Rescue. She is now doing a lot better; we are letting some of the infection clear up before Dr. Ed amputates. She is getting around really well and is playing with my dog that is smaller than her. She is so precious and is finally learning how to love and bond with people. Her recovery will take several months, but I look forward to caring for her during her stay at my home.
