In Defense of Animals (IDA) is an international animal welfare organization with numerous programs designed to improve the lives of all types of animals. One of their campaigns is called the Guardian Campaign and it is an international effort with the purpose to instill greater levels of respect, responsibility and compassion toward the animals we share in our lives. The goal is to get every city in the US and across the world to adopt the language of 'animal guardian' as the first step in improving the legal status of our companion animals. The term 'animal owner' implies that our animals are property that can be disposed of at will and, of course, this is a societal mindset that needs to change.

Randy Grim and Quentin have teamed up with IDA to support this campaign and Quentin is IDA's national spokesdog. Randy was honored by IDA in 2003 for his work in getting the City of St. Louis to alter the language of city animal ordinances to reflect the verbiage "animal guardian" rather than "animal owner". Many other US cities have joined in this campaign as well as all the cities in the entire state of Vermont. Read more about Randy Grim's effort in St. Louis. In addition, Stray Rescue honored Dr. Elliott Katz, President of IDA, for his work at their 2005 Hope for the Holiday's Gala.

The Guardian Campaign

"Our dream is to have every person, young and old, see and treat animals not as objects, property and things to be exploited, abused abandoned or killed, but as individuals who deserve consideration for their needs and quality of life. Our dream is fast becoming a reality as hundreds of thousands of caring people are throwing off the mantel of "owner" in favor of the caring mantle of "guardian".

The benefits of relating to animals as guardians rather than as owners - of always adopting and rescuing animals rather than buying or selling them - are far reaching. K From helping to end the deaths of millions of animals in our nation's shelters….to helping to end the horrors of the puppy mill trade…to encouraging the passage of laws that will deter and punish animal abuse…to raising our next generation of children to act with responsibility, respect and compassion toward the animals they come in contact with and share their lives with…are but a few of the benefits that will accrue to our animal friends. I thank you for helping this dream become a reality."
