| Hugo is one of our more amazing
rescues. He was spotted on the street as a young puppy with a yellow rope
tied around his neck. Even with his young age he was already scared of
people and would run from us when we tried to rescue him. We saw him for
many months getting bigger and bigger and the rope getting tighter and
tighter. We thought about setting up one of our humane traps but Hugo
was never in the same area when we saw him. After awhile he disappeared
and we feared the rope had just gotten too tight and... about 6 months
later we spotted him again. The only way we could recognize him was that
filthy, yellow rope. It was dug into his skin so far that all you could
see was the loose ends dangling. You could also smell the terrible infection
from yards away. Luckily this time Hugo was hanging out in the same area.
He was still very scared of us, but with daily feedings he was beginning
to trust us. We knew we had to get him before it got too hot and all the
flies and bugs would be hanging around his neck. Very early one morning
we set up the trap with lots of braunschweiger and hot dogs. Amazingly
Hugo went right in. He was immediately taken to Hillside Animal Hospital
to be assessed. He would need surgery to remove the rope. We also discovered
he had heartworms. The surgery was done that day and he came through with
flying colors. Hugo spent several days at the vets office before coming to our shelter. He would need daily bandage changes and have his wound cleaned. Even though the rope was removed he was still having trouble breathing. Dr Migneco took some x-rays and noticed Hugo's trachea was very narrow at the point where the knot in the rope had been. He would need another surgery to correct this. Even though he had never done this type of surgery before, Dr Migneco was up for the challenge. It was a complete success. Hats off to Dr Migneco for a great job! Hugo is now on the road to recovery. He is very sweet and playful. He loves everyone he meets. He gets along great with other dogs but does seem a bit curious about the cats at the vets office. He is completely housebroken and is not destructive. His will to survive amazes us all. We guarantee whoever adopts this guy will be inspired by him every day. If you would like to meet this brave boy just fill out a Questionnaire/ Application. |
