October 14, 2005 Update
Another 19 dogs arrived from the Gulf Coast on Thursday, October 13 bringing our total to 107 animals. Unlike our previous caravans which brought us dogs rescued in the disaster zone in Mississippi, these dogs came from New Orleans. All were rescued by volunteers 4-5 weeks after Hurricane Katrina impacted the city. The staging center in Gonzales, Louisiana, where these dogs were housed after rescue had to close last week and so there was an immediate need to relocate these dogs with other rescue groups across the country. With the help of Linda Blair of the World Heart Foundation and In Defense of Animal's Project Hope, Stray Rescue committed to taking 20 of these wonderful dogs. (Due to lack of space in our cars, one dog was left at Project Hope and will be brought to STL in our next caravan. Sonia, one of Project Hope's employees, has taken this dog into her home and is spoiling him with lots of attention and love.) Those needing immediate medical attention were taken to Hillside Animal Hospital as well as Chippewa Animal Hospital and the rest are now in a foster home or enjoying the attention of our volunteers at one of our shelters. A big thanks goes to Country Acres Kennels which provided space and attention for 2 of our dogs. These dogs will be placed on Petfinder.com for one month and if their guardian does not contact us, these dogs will be placed up for adoption here in St. Louis. If you are a New Orleans pet guardian looking for your dog, please go to Petfinder as we have posted these dogs on this website. Most have an ID number starting with SR followed by a number. In addition to the 19 rescue dogs, we also brought to St. Louis, a small mama dog and her only surviving pup from Mississippi. The momma dog was abandoned 6 months ago and survived only because a neighbor fed her regularly. Starved for affection and food, Stray Rescue volunteers readily agreed to carry them on their laps for the trip to St. Louis. We wouldn't be able to help this many dogs without the generosity of our donors and supporters. We are so very grateful that you want to help these animals who have endured severe hardship for the past 7 weeks. View pictures of our arrival at Stray Rescue Woof! Randy Grim |
