  THE RESCUE OF KEATON

As we do our feeding route one morning, with temperatures in the teens, I spotted something on the side of the road. It finally registered that this was actually a dog but a dog so close to death, it was urgent that we rescue him no matter what the cost or how hard it might be. The poor thing ran from us with his hunched bony body and with every step he took, you could tell he was hurting. None of us wanted to see him run, we knew he might not survive an all out chase. He would collapse in certain areas when he thought he lost us, but when he saw us again he would take off. On a vibe, we thought he might have gone in to this burnt out house to hide. He did. But when he reappeared he couldn't run anymore. His sick body was giving out. All he could do to protect himself from us was growl and snap but his broken down frame could run no more. I thought if I could throw my coat over him, I could just grab him and let him bite. I would get him to my car at any cost. It worked! Safe now at Chippewa Animal Hospital, the staff will heal his many, many wounds. Stray Rescue will heal his soul. He would never have survived one more night (the coldest night of the year). This is a special dog. One day we all can't wait to see him go to his special loving forever home where suffering is not in the vocabulary.
