  THE RESCUE OF POWDER

The vision of Powder had haunted me for some time. A shattered hip, mange and searing temperatures have taken their toll on this gentle, sweet dog. I'd spotted him before, and tried to rescue him to no avail. Ironically, the first time I saw Powder he was laying under a sign that read "Jesus Saves" as if he thought being by the sign would help. It did not.

With the temperature eclipsing 100 this day, I fully expected to find Powder dead somewhere. He looked so close to death already; I wondered how he could survive the July heat wave. My search took me to a dilapidated, abandoned house, where I saw a body scurry across the floor into a dark closet. It was Powder. Weakened by the temperature and his ailments, Powder offered no resistance as I picked him up. Now safe with Dr. Ed, Powder's physical wounds will heal. Dr. Ed said it was a miracle that Powder can even walk his threshold for pain is as strong as his will to survive.

One day soon this special dog will be physically and emotionally healed, ready for that special loving home where he can enjoy a long, happy and pain-free life.

Update: Great news, Powder has been adopted. View photos of Powder as he was leaving Hillside Animal Hospital after lots of TLC and extensive hip surgery. He's healing nicely and heading for his forever home.
