Two Emergencies, One YOU!

Meet Cosmo & Starlight

A call came in about a puppy all by himself in an alleyway. The finders gave him a bowl of water, but because they have a puppy themselves, they didn’t want to touch him in case he had parvovirus. He appeared very sick.

Donna headed out right away, expecting to find a meandering, lost puppy. But she found the baby collapsed in the middle of the alley. She wrapped him in a towel and carried him to the Jeep, thanking the callers – they spotted him just in time.  She could see all the fleas crawling all over him and how white his gums were. He was very anemic and needed help right away.

She loaded the puppy in the car, put on her seatbelt, and her phone rang again. Another call came in – an emaciated dog laying by the road needed help. The address was only 4 minutes away, so she and the little puppy headed there together to save another life.

This one was a female blue pittie, just sitting by the road. She appeared to be waiting for her ride to the hospital…us! We saw how skinny she was, and was also covered in fleas and flea dirt. She also had a funny smell, which we would later discover was motor oil. A debunked myth is that if you put motor oil on a dog with fleas, it will suffocate and kill the fleas. But it can be VERY harmful for a dog. We could tell she was exhausted, but she greeted us with tail wags and the sweetest face. She was grateful for our help.

We rushed the both souls back to the shelter. The puppy, who we named Cosmo, received a parvovirus test (negative), x-rays for a blockage (negative), and Capstar to kill all those fleas. His gums were also white-white, and he ended up having to go our 24-hour emergency partner for ‘round the clock care, heat support, and a blood transfusion.

We named the adult female Starlight. We gave her a bath to wash all that motor oil off, gave her a Capstar to kill the fleas, and put her on a refeeding schedule because she is so emaciated. We’ll have to reintroduce her system to food slowly and safely. She has open pressure sores on her hips and passed out the very moment we got her set up in a comfy spot.

Two emergencies, one you! Please give today to help us cover their medical costs and save their beautiful lives! Cosmo and Starlight, stay strong. You’ll never be scared, alone, or sick again. Strayrescue.org/cosmo-starlight
