Healing A Tortured Dog's Soul Begins With A Special Touch-The Enrichment Team!October 7, 2015 | 2:47pm
Pulling up to the Pine Street shelter, I see some familiar smiling faces walking a cluster of dogs. Tails are wagging as they head off for their urban hike, ready to be loved on while being taught some social skills. Gone are the days of being on heavy monster chains, scrounging through garbage on the mean streets or beaten and shot for their crime of being born. This clan is learning what it's like to just be a dog and not a target for abuse. The healing has begun.
At Stray Rescue we heal the dogs with our form of dogma, rebuilding their minds, bodies and souls. This task is led by nine of the most compassionate people on the planet – our Enrichment Team. This team is made up of trainers to dog handling specialists. The one major requirement I ask of them is to do this healing using love. You can teach a dog to sit, but to teach a dog to trust humans again requires more than a biscuit. It takes a recipe of love, kindness, patience and understanding their issues and needs, plus a good hot dog to coax them out of their shells.
I have personally seen the Enrichment Team work miracles, and they are yet another reason why I think Stray Rescue is such a special place. I think of a feral dog I recently rescued named Ikea. Never before touched by people, she would sit in the corner shaking with her back to us. Yesterday I saw her on a walk. Yes, a walk! I saw her tail up, and I saw her once soulless eyes radiating hope. No longer is she in the corner but instead has a roommate to help her along the way. This is the Enrichment Team in action, performing their daily miracles.
Seeing a dog once beaten so badly and injured, I wonder if he will enjoy life again. Looking into the dog yard, I see the same dog smiling with enthusiasm as he leaps through our agility course – a dog's ultimate playground. Again, another miracle by our Enrichment Team.
Sometimes it is a simple car ride that can create a lasting bond. We give out plenty of car rides!
Stray Rescue is special; it is a place of miracles. I wanted to share our Enrichment Team with the masses and hope you can thank them with me. I love them as individuals, and I'm amazed by all of them as a team.
You can help the Enrichment Team continue to do their powerful magic of healing the tortured dog souls by giving a donation today. This team is just as important as our life-saving medical care. Donate today and help bring another dog out of his shell and into a home. Let's all give a shout out to Stray Rescue's Enrichment Team!
I am proud of you guys!
Love and woof,
