Ikea came to Stray Rescue feral. For those of you that are not familiar with what "feral" means, it is not that they are mean, but that they have had no or little contact with people. They are very fearful, not only of people but things that are part of our lives. This could be anything from storms, stairs, hairdryers, the tv, walking on leash, etc. Things that are normal for us are all new to a feral. They need a lot of patience and letting things happen at their own pace. It's also very important to understand that they can be a flight risk. Open doors can be very inviting, so be aware of where the dog is when you open a door that leads to the outside (this can be true of any new dog that you bring home!). When in the yard, always take out on a leash, even if your yard is fenced. A feral dog will take time to adjust, but don't let that discourage you from even considering to adopt a feral dog. Watching these dogs adjust and figure out "how to be a dog" is one of the most rewarding things you will ever be part of. They will form a close bond and become a loyal companion.
Ikea has come a long way at the shelter. She can still be fearful of new and different things, but she is ready for that next step. If you think you are interested in making Ikea a member of your family, fill out an application. We will talk to you about adopting a feral, the precautiions to take and things you can expect as they progress.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IKEA IS AT OUR PINE ST. SHELTER.
PLEASE CHECK STATUS BEFORE FILLING OUT AN APPLICATION TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NOT AN ADOPTION PENDING.
