Jumbo Jack's Journey to love
July 2, 2020 | 2:08pm
World, we are ready for you to meet Jumbo Jack.
He came to us with a gunshot in his face. We are told he was shot two weeks ago and left untreated. When he arrived, we confirmed YES, this is not a fresh wound. This giant angel has been suffering all alone for weeks. What a hellish existence he was forced to live, by the hand of man.
When he arrived at Stray Rescue, we cleaned him up and of course, as we always do, we fell in love with him. He deserves better than this, and we couldn't let him die knowing such horror and pain. We sent him directly to receive a specialty life-saving surgery to remove half of his lower jaw. He had his surgery today and did well.
He will first eat with a feeding tube, but will learn to eat on his own again soon. We just have to go very slowly because he is also emaciated and we have to avoid re-feeding syndrome. If you feed an emaciated dog too much too soon, it actually make them very sick and can even be fatal.
Please keep Jumbo Jack in your prayers during his healing journey. And again, we can't stress this enough: If you witness animal abuse or an animal in desperate need of help, it is your duty to report it and get them help. We have to be their voice.

Jumbo Jack is home! It has been such a violent summer.
Someone shot him in the face, shattering his jaw. His wounds were left unattended for two weeks, and the infection was horrible. Thankfully, we were able to remove part of his jaw and he should be able to make a full recovery! He has a feeding tube in for now and will slowly be fed several times a day until his mouth is healed enough to learn to eat on his own. Big sweet Jumbo Jack, we love you bubba! We got him the biggest bed we could find and he loves when we lay with him. He enjoys going for walks, too!

Jumbo Jack can’t wait until he can eat on his own again. Until then, time for breakfast (with a feeding tube!) This guy has us completely wrapped around his finger. Love him sooo much. How could anyone hurt this big sweet angel?

Emergency: "We did not come this far to only come this far"
Over the last few days Jumbo Jack started feeling so much better, and we even saw him gallop on a walk! This dog is made of nothing but love. He has stolen our hearts, and we all give him massages and tell him about the day he will soon get nothing but cheeseburgers
Sadly, on Wednesday at 4pm (yesterday), his health took a sharp turn. His breathing became labored and shallow, and he seemed so uncomfortable. Our amazing vet team checked on him immediately and discovered he had a pneumothorax, which means that air is escaping into his chest cavity. Without wasting a moment, we loaded him in the car and rushed him to an emergency specialist. Everyone prayed for him all night that he would make it. The car ride seemed to pep him up a bit (he loves car rides!). We had a talk with him in the car and told him to be brave and strong. He’s so close to healing, he just has to go a little further. "Jack, we did not come this far to only come this far."
Please help us raise the funds needed for his surgery today. He is in this mess because humans have let him down. We have been dreaming of the day he gets to play in a yard of his own with his loving family. We dream of him tasting a nutritious meal again. We dream of him lounging on a couch and taking a nap and being happy and healthy. If we all chip in a little, we can give him the life he deserves. And just like every other animal who comes to us for help, he deserves it.

Update on Jumbo Jack:
Thank you all for your incredible support! We love him so much. He did make it through his surgery and is stable. All week his bloodwork has looked good, but now there is suddenly something wrong with his liver. Hopefully there aren't more underlying issues, but this is all we know at this time. We will keep you posted as we learn more. For now, at least knowing he is stable is enough. Keep him in your prayers and send him all the positive vibes! ?
You got this buddy, we love you!!

Update on Jumbo Jack: His bloodwork is improving! He’s excited to try to eat orally. So excited, but he did still have some trouble swallowing. There are a lot of changes in his mouth, so hopefully he will relearn soon. He has been walking around is being such a champ!! We haven’t been able to visit him because of COVID but are counting down the days until we can kiss him! In the meantime he is getting wonderful care!

Guess who is home? Our beloved Jumbo Jack!
We love him and missed him so much. We were hoping he'd be feeling better and eating real food, but sadly that is not the case for our Jack. After having a swallow test, it was discovered he currently does not have the ability to swallow, due to trauma caused by the gunshot. We've been promising him a delicious meal and are so disappointed to hear this news. His bloodwork is also showing that his liver is doing poorly. He still enjoys our cuddles and loves going for walks, so we hope we can get him to where he needs to be to have a wonderful and happy life. Thank you to everyone who has been donating and praying for our special boy. He is worth it and he feels your love, near and far.

Jumbo Jack’s only chance at truly healing will be in a home. Being in a family will help him heal so much faster than at the shelter. A huge shout out to foster mom Diane! We know taking him home is a lot of work with his scheduled tube feedings, blending the food, crushing his meds, etc!. You are the best!
Here is what she has to say:
“Jumbo Jack has been settling in the past few days. I keep whatever room I'm in split and he is separate from my dogs for now. Since Tuesday he has already come a long way. The boy is stubborn at times but oh so sweet. He loves to go outside in the yard or sit on the balcony. Today he barked for the first time! Lightly just few times, but he did. He even came over to me today while I was working and nudged me like hey, time to show me some attention!” ❤️?

Jumbo Jack came in to be weighed, he FINALLY gained 3 pounds. It doesn’t seem like much, but he may finally be moving in the right direction. Being in a foster home is healing his heart and sadness! And he still loves car rides! We love you Jack, don’t stop now, buddy! Doesn't he look so much happier? ?
