Saving Sparks

Ameren workers called, they’ve heard of sightings of a skinny dog around their property since mid-July. They finally saw him themselves and were shocked by how skinny he was! They offered him their lunch and called us right away – He’s here! He needs help!

We arrive and this pup is so weak, he doesn’t even try to get up as we approach. He’s worked his way into a shady spot in an open structure. The workers are so thankful we’re here to get him, and they express how worried they’ve been about him.

We offer him a Vienna sausage to show him we are friends and mean no harm.

Guys – the way this starving dog so gently took the sausages nearly put us in tears. Typically, they’ll go “CHOMP CHOMP,” (for obvious reasons!) but he was so gentle. Sweet boy.

We load him into the rescue Jeep, and that’s really when we can see how emaciated he is. This poor, sweet guy was so excited for his freedom ride.

He’s FREE of hunger

FREE of thirst

and FREE of lonely days

Whenever we rescue a dog this skinny, they have to go on a refeeding schedule. We have to feed them very small amounts – and slowly – so their bodies can get used to food and nourishment again. Feeding them too much too quick can make them very sick. It can even be life-threatening! He had a spark of joy on his freedom ride, and as a nod to the kind Ameren workers, we named him Sparks.
