Animal abuse doesn't take a summer vacation
June 7, 2022 | 9:12am
As our streets heat up in the sweltering summer sun, the helpless wandering animals of St. Louis need you even more. Historically, the summer heat coincides with a big drop in donations. But animal abuse does not take a summer vacation. In fact, when temperatures increase we see a significant increase in the inhumane treatment of man's best friend. In the past week alone we’ve rescued animals off the street after being shot, beaten, and hit by cars. We've taken those that other shelters were ready to euthanize and discard simply because they needed medical care. We've rescued from small towns where good Samaritans couldn't get any help after finding injured animals. If you’re reading this you’re an animal lover, and if you’re an animal lover you need to watch and read what we've been up to! PLEASE consider donating any amount. We’re constantly battling the tides of animal cruelty, and at the moment we’re having a hard time coming up for air, but your donations are the life raft these precious souls need. Your donations will help us keep saying YES!
New rescue: Shot and wouldn't leave her friend's side. Please donate for our Garden and Peony who were both shot. We will keep them together. After all they’ve been through together the universe decided that nothing can keep them apart, and who are we to try to stand in the way of that.
A sheriff of a small, rural town threatened to shoot this nursing mom and her babies. A Good Samaritan panicked and loaded them in her car to ensure their safety; she was not going to let them be exterminated at the hands of a cruel human. She didn't stop driving until she got to Stray Rescue where she knew they would be safe and get the care they need. Our shelter was completely full, but of course we said YES, we can take them:
This poor cat was miserable with a huge abscess he needed drained. He is going to start feeling so much better soon:
These two precious puppies came to us in bad shape: one with a broken hip and one with a crushed leg. Those are very serious injuries but with the right care these resilient and strong little animals will persevere and have wonderful lives. Both need expensive, specialty surgeries and they can’t start down their path to recovery without your support.
It’s impossible for us to fully express just how grateful we are for kind people. This dog showed up in a woman's back alley collapsed, unable to walk. Many people would’ve left him there to die but she carried him to her deck to offer him water and food. He showed zero interest, so she called us. We took him straight to our clinic thinking he may have severe heartworms because of his big, bloated belly, but sadly Dr. Schulz thinks it is a tumor from an aggressive cancer which is not good news. The next steps will be fluids, bloodwork, and x-rays. We named this very cute boy Alexander and we will keep you updated on his journey.
These little malnourished puppies found covered in fleas and missing hair on a very hot day:
This big bundle of sweetness has a very painful situation with which anyone could sympathize. He has a prolapsed urethra. Actively bleeding and in extreme pain every time he urinated, we're told he’d been living in pain for over two weeks. He loves dogs, kids, and all people. We're so happy to give this perfect boy the medical care he needs, his name is Louie the Meatball:
Formidable strength and an outright will to survive are what drove this incredible mama kitty to nurse her kittens while suffering from a broken pelvis. Her kittens are now weaned, and she can finally have the surgery she needs. The perseverance to not only survive her injury and the birth of her kittens, but then to nurse them all the way to weaning is truly inspiring.
This dog was transported to Stray Rescue all the way from Indiana. A Good Samaritan saw him get hit by a car. Being a kind-hearted person, she loaded him in her car and called every vet office and rescue group she could think of in her small town.
She found someone who could perform the needed surgery but the cost associated with the amputation procedure was $1,200. She didn’t have that kind of money to spare and already had 4 dogs of her own. She couldn't find anyone that would help this dog and she wasn’t going to simply discard him, he trusted her now. She called us and we said we could help free him from pain. He is an angel, loves everyone, and will be ready for a foster home or forever home very soon. His name is Chilli.
This sweet guy had a mass removed. Here he is post-surgery before he woke up from the anesthesia. We have so many animals having surgery that he is laying next to the desk.
Can you help?
The animals we rescue are given a life of love because of your generosity. This year you have already helped us save countless souls who needed a generous heart and a helping hand. Now we ask you to help us save dogs like Peony and her loyal friend Garden. Like the two broken puppies Gianni and Donatella. Like the nursing mom and babies who were going to be killed just because no one wanted to take on the responsibility. Please don't forget about the animals who need you this summer.
